The sack-back was made of similar gown fabric at the back arranged in box pleats at the shoulders and which fell loose to the floor. It was worn with panniers under the petticoat. In front, the gown was open, showing off a decorative stomacher and petticoat. Scalloped ruffles often trimmed elbow-length sleeves, which were worn with separate frills called engageantes.


Swedish portrait painter :
Alexander Roslin was born on July 15, 1718, in Malmö, Sweden.
In 1759 he married Marie-Suzanne Giroust. He plied his trade in Stockholm, Bayreuth, Vienna, Paris and Italy.
